Eating Alaska

Eating Alaska is a serious and humorous film about connecting to where you live and eating locally. It is about trying to break away from the industrial food system when that means not only buying fresh seasonal food from local farmers, but taking part in a world of hunting and gathering. Made by a former city dweller now living on an island in Alaska and married to fisherman and deer hunter, it is a journey into regional food traditions, our connection to the wilderness and to what we put into our mouths. The film portrays a wry quest for safe, healthy, meaningful, and sustainable food that leads to climbing mountains with women hunters, scrutinizing food labels with kids, talking moose meat with teens in a small village public school, and exploring how others in the last frontier, Alaska Natives and non-Natives, are eating. |

Good Food
August 11, 2010 @ 8pm
August 14, 2010 @ 8pm |

|
Something remarkable is happening in fields and orchards across North America. Small family farmers are making a comeback, growing healthier food, and lots more food per acre, while using less energy and water than factory farms. They are sowing the seeds of a local and sustainable food system. Nowhere have those seeds taken root like in the Pacific Northwest. Good Food presents the unsung heroes of this emerging farm economy and the love they have for their work. We walk in the fields, ride in the trucks, and shop in the markets where farmers, grocers, lawmakers, and citizens are cultivating a more sustainable food system. A vibrant celebration of what is already happening, Good Food offers an inspiring view of what's possible everywhere. |

With a staggering number of Americans suffering from obesity and other food-related maladies, this film takes a timely and hard-hitting look at how the food we eat is helping or hurting our health, and what we can do to live (and eat) better. Nutritionists, naturopaths, scientists, doctors, medical journalists and more weigh in on everything from using food as medicine to the value of organic food and the safety of the food we consume. |

When Learning Comes Naturally

 |

|
When Learning Comes Naturally documents innovative outdoor-education programs around the country created to help children understand and experience the wonders and joys of nature. The film explores the immediate and lasting benefits of introducing young children to "green" experiences. Natural spaces - in the form of gardens, small trails and outdoor "green adventure" areas - allow for the discoveries and choices vital to child development and learning. In addition, outdoor education can cultivate in children a permanent connection with the natural world - a crucial ethic of environmental responsibility. |

Eco-Sense for Living: Children and Nature
August 14, 2010 at 7:30pm |
| |
 |

|
Remember how kids used to play outside every day, running through the neighborhood until sunset? In this episode of EcoSense for Living we explore "nature deficit disorder," a term coined by Richard Louv (author, Last Child in the Woods), to describe the physical, mental, and emotional effects that children suffer when they lose contact with nature. Richard pinpoints how we came to be a nation separated from the natural world and how we can reverse it. We'll also hike with psychologist, Dr. David Busch, who uses nature therapy to help kids with ADD and ADHD. Then we'll experience how urban communities reconnect kids to nature through gardening, beekeeping, and creating safe untamed places where kids can still run wild. Find out how you can reconnect kids to their natural roots in your part of the world. Hosted by Jennie Garlington. |

The Last One
August 21, 2010 @ 7pm |

Moonshiner Popcorn Sutton demonstrates the traditional craft of liquor distillation in the wilds of Southern Appalachia, from locating a secluded site to building the still, brewing the mash and distilling the liquor. In exclusive footage, Sutton describes the craft and technique of moonshine production along with a lifetime of memories in the trade. Experts and authors are interviewed to comment on the role of moonshine in Appalachian heritage and history and to give perspectives on the stereotype of the mountain moonshiner. The charismatic Popcorn Sutton reminisces about the rough days of his youth, moonshine glory days, and a way of life that has altogether disappeared. |

|
Shocking research results, inadequate regulations and warnings from eminent scientists explain why GM foods are dangerous and should be removed from kids’ meals. The dramatic story of how student behavior in a Wisconsin school was transformed with a healthy diet provides added motivation to make a change. It features Jeffrey Smith and more than a dozen scientists and experts. |

Your Milk on Drugs
August 28, 2010 @ 7:30pm |

|
Dairy products from cows treated with Monsanto’s genetically engineered bovine growth hormone (rBGH or rBST) may sharply increase cancer risk and other diseases, especially in children. Already banned in most industrialized nations, it was approved in the US on the backs of fired whistleblowers, manipulated research, and a corporate take-over of the FDA. This must-see film includes footage prepared for a Fox TV station but was canceled after a letter from Monsanto’s attorney threatened “dire consequences.” |
