You have heard a great deal about the Pennsylvania FY10 budget and its impact on the state’s cultural institutions, including MiND TV and the state’s public television stations. In simplest terms, Pennsylvania’s eight public stations are allocated $1 million in operating grants for FY10, compared with $8 million in FY09-a reduction of 87.5%. (For MiND, that’s about $80,000 vs. $700,000). That’s not good.
While we are extremely disappointed at this outcome, we are deeply grateful to the thousands of individuals who contacted legislators and the Governor on our behalf. (Thank you!) If there is good news in this result, it is that allocation was not $0, as was originally proposed. That gives us and our colleague stations a platform in the state budget from which to restore funding in a better economy and environment.
MiND is a very lean organization, with a small staff that is dedicated to making the most of its resources no matter the financial circumstance. However, the unfortunate reality is that the business of operating a television station is expensive, and we need the financial support of our community to continue. Because state funding is no longer reliable, the success or failure of MiND will depend largely on individual contributions.
We’ve come a long way in the past year, and it is up to you to help us continue providing our unique and important brand of independent media. Every bit helps - whether you can give $5 or $500, your contribution will directly impact our ability to carry on in a very positive way.
