About Independence Media
“Independence Media enriches lives through programs and services that entertain, educate, and inspire. We believe in the power of television and new technologies to connect communities, promote diversity, and encourage understanding.”
Our name, MiND: Media Independence, finds its origin in the name of our organization, Independence Media. Officially known as Independence Public Media of Philadelphia, Inc, we are a 510(c)3 non-profit, rooted in traditions of diversity and independent media, giving voice to people and ideas rarely seen or heard on traditional television.
Founded more than 20 years ago, Independence Media has served the community as WYBE Public Television, providing viewers in the Greater Philadelphia area with extensive international news coverage; documentaries; and entertainment programs from around the world. Operating on over-the-air analog channel 35 and digital channel 34 in Philadelphia, PA, we reach nearly 6 million people in 11 counties.
MiND is a multi-platform service of Independence Media. Predominantly, we call ourselves MiND instead of Independence Media or WYBE – as we feel it embodies our mission, and deepens our connection to our community. This was a thoughtful choice as we strive to be TV that engages the ‘MiND.’ Our programming is focused on learning, and on the individual and collaborative participation of many people in our community.
The MiND schedule will embrace the 5-minute, short-form MiND programs, many made by our members. During other times, we will bring you more traditional long-form programs you might familiar with from WYBE – including Democracy Now! and Philadelphia Stories.
