Sing Loud with the Windows Open

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Music Education & Appreciation Month on MiND took us to South Africa, to the inner workings of a pipe organ, to get swept away in the amazing power of collective feminist voices and to simply take a minute to stop, and listen to the music.

We decided to dedicate an entire month to music for so many reasons. But most of all, because of its universal power to connect us all to each other, to ourselves, and to the greater world.

We were very fortunate to have so many talented hearts and voices participate in Music Education & Appreciation on MiND . We want to thank all of you for your continued contributions to making this world a better, and more beautiful, place.

To all of our viewers and fans, we encourage you to pick up an instrument and play. To blast, and sing along to, your favorite songs as you commute along 76 or 95 with the windows down. To let your unique voice be the loudest one in your family when you sing happy birthday to a loved one.  (I know mine is truly what they call “flat” and I am definitely “tone deaf” but that doesn’t stop me - even if the cat the leaves the room, I sing it like I feel it). If you ask me, letting music into your life is about experiencing the joy of being alive. It’s not about being classically trained (though that helps), or hitting the perfect notes or knowing all the words. It’s about keeping an open heart and living a musical life.

There is only one week left for Music Education & Appreciation Month on MiND, but that doesn’t mean the appreciation of music in our lives has to stop! Keep the beat going!

Restoring a Classic

Learn the skills and techniques required to restore an 80 year old pipe organ!  The Keswick Theater in Glenside, PA, is having a 1,700 pipe Moller Theater Organ restored, which is an extraordinary project, since it is a very intricate, detail-oriented process.  With every note involving at least three moving parts to make a sound, it can take up to 2-4 hours to find the proper route for just one note!  Take a look at this fascinating practice where music meets mechanics!

The Anna Crusis Women’s Choir: Music and Social Change

As the longest running feminist choir in the US, the Anna Crusis Women’s Choir has been a pioneer establishment since 1975.  With a mission to spread awareness and advocate social change through their performances, this choir selects songs that convey themes of justice, peace, and equality.  With a diverse repertoire that spans over countless genres and languages, the Anna Crusis Women’s Choir is “an undiscovered treasure” that we’re excited to display.  Immerse yourself in their skillful harmonies, uplifting mission, and the noteworthy details of this choir’s rich “herstory!”

Be sure to tune in!
