Maggi, Pierce and E.J. “White”
Maggi, Pierce and E.J.’s debut CD paints seventeen musical pictures of what they would become. A bit less produced than later albums, it still shows a depth beyond most seasoned pros. From the basic country-inspired laugher Won't Happen Twice to the light power pop rock of “50 Miles (Outside N.Y.)” to the classically influenced folk of Don't Go Away to the poppy, floating “What's the Point”, these guys nail one after the other until you come out of the other end of the tunnel convinced. Folky, poppy, full of twists and turns and odd chord progressions and surprises around every corner, it is a great first effort.– Declaring Independents (Released 1995).

Maggi, Pierce and E.J. – “Black”
A mini-composition, “Sweeter” leads off Maggi, Pierce and E.J.’s second CD by combining powerful guitar, odd harmonies and a sense of pop which pushes the envelope. Maggi then gives us musical magic with “Smyle”, losing herself and finding herself in melodic magnificence, with Pierce and E.J. providing their usual odd-but-incredibly-right-there harmonies. E.J. prefaces his developing style with “Scared of a Word”, a song which combines rock and roll with a jazzy Manhattan Transfer-style vocal. Deviant and idiosyncratic, it gallops at a dizzying pace through lines that either make you laugh or shake your head in wonder. – Declaring Independents (Released 1997).

Maggi, Pierce and E.J. “Red”
There are many high-points on Maggi, Pierce and E.J.’s third CD, Red: “Implode” is classic Maggi with insane and somewhat musical-nonmusical break for good measure. And when Maggi takes a “Bath", you'll line up with the rest of us because, as usual, it is cosmic. It’s even communal as her voice leads and Pierce and E.J. follow, making the high that much higher. – Declaring Independents (Released 1998).

Maggi, Pierce and E.J. “For”
For is Maggi, Pierce & E.J.s fourth CD, and is a tribute to the late Jeff Buckley. What immediately stands out about For, especially for those out there who know the Jeff Buckley catalog well, is inspired use of Buckley melodies, vocal semblances, and an evolved pop version of that melancholic sound. This is one record that weaves its subject in and out virtually undetected until you give it several listens. It feels familiar, and puts into perspective what it feels like to lose a vital musical force in your life. I hate to use the word “charming”, but that's what springs to mind, because the great variance and creative use of rhythm, instrumental textures, and that charmed, mysterious quality that invaded Buckley's work translates here.– Indie-Music.com (Released 2000).

Maggi, Pierce and E.J. “Gold”
While folk-rock is the foundation of this 2004 release, the Philly trio acknowledges quite a few other styles of music; during the course of the album, Maggi, Pierce & E.J. incorporate everything from jazz ("Jaded," "Flame") to alternative country/No Depression ("Fate Train," "Memphis in Your Hand") to Indian raga ("Dagger"). Pierce and E.J. haven't totally forgotten their hip-hop past; MPE makes a few hip-hoppish moves on the funky "Mr. Moon." But for all its eclecticism, The Gold Album never sounds unfocused or confused; MPE know exactly what they are doing on this unpredictable, far-reaching CD. – All Music Guide (Released 2004).

Maggi, Pierce and E.J. “Silver”
Silver is really three CDs. They are labeled Morgan, Mittag, and Nacht (Morning, Midday, and Night in German). The Morgan CD is filled with lovely folk songs; “Big Falls, WI” is one highlight that has such a catchy sound you will be humming it long after you’ve turned off the stereo. The Mittag CD opens with “Kennison” which is about as perfect a pop song as you could wish for. “Music of the Sea” is also great, with an upbeat tempo, catchy melody and sweet harmonies. The Nacht CD is a bit harder, but still has its soft moments. The range here is from punk to funk to new wave. “706” even has a late-Beatles sound to it.-- Collected Sounds (Released 2005).

Maggi, Pierce and E.J. – “Live Covers”
You know Maggi, Pierce and E.J. They're Philly's chipper folk-jazz-hop sops. But did you know that after recording their shiny Silver -- but before starting that infamous walking tour from Philly to D.C.—the trio had studio time and money left over? That's how they came to record the lovely, rough Live Covers (in Berlin). While their cover of "Sorry Signs on Cash Machines" (from Mason Jennings) is gorgeous, raw and pure, it's the trio's Dixieland-like take on Van Halen's "Could This Be Magic?" that's most infectious.– Philadelphia City Paper (Released 2006).

Maggi, Pierce and E.J. – “Kahchee Moochee”
The fade-in on Kahchee Moochee, “Around the World”, features percussive thumps bleeding into keyboards bleeding into violin bleeding into acoustic rhythm guitar and Maggi's melodic and unique voice. MPE lightens it up with “Rong Song”, a tune which would be a ditty if it wasn't so damn good. Don't like light ditties? “Helen, Chatahoochee” might just change your mind, ukuleles light and airy beneath 50s variety show vocals and lyrics. Slightly bluesy acoustic picking sets the tone for "Birds", though Maggi's vocals take it more toward the jazzy side of Americana. If MPE doesn't have you by then, a topnotch remake of the Hoodoo Gurus' “Like Wow-Wipeout” should put the nail in the ol' coffin. – Acousticmusic.com (Released 2008).

Hymn For Her – “Year of the Golden Pig”
The duo heard on Hymn for Her’s first album, Year of the Golden Pig, is two-thirds of MPE; Hymn for Her is Maggi, Pierce & E.J. minus E.J., and stylistically, this 2008 release isn't a radical departure from MPE even though Hymn for Her is more stripped down and minimalist. Maggi and Pierce still provide acoustic-oriented folk-rock that is as subtle and understated as it is substantial. Maggi is far from a belter; her vocals are delicate and restrained, but emotionally, she has no problem getting her points across on intimate performances such as "Highway Maggi," "Sugar Monkey," "Yer Flower," and the Latin-flavored "Tatiana." Subtle, dry humor is an attractive part of the equation on Year of the Golden Pig, and Maggi's use of understatement is perfect for a less overt type of humor. Admirers of MPE's work should have no problem getting into Hymn for Her.– All Music Guide (Released 2008).

You Purple Virgin “Heart Like a Tiny Jewel”
Swimming in neo-psychedelic waters is the latest side project by E.J. Simpson (of Maggi, Pierce and E.J. fame.) He's calling himself You Purple Virgin and the album's "Like a Tiny Jewel". Think free floatin' dreamscapes evocative of vintage Steve Miller, Beach Boys and It's a Beautiful Day. – Philadelphia Daily News. (Released 2009).
