Squashsmarts: Teaching the Sport of Squash

Member: Independence Media

The sport of squash, not to be confused with the vegetable, is a sport similar to racquetball. Two players inside of a court take turns hitting the ball, with each person trying to score the most points by not letting the ball bounce twice. Squashsmarts is an after-school program that combines the instruction of the sport of squash with academic tutoring and mentoring. They use this novelty sport to improve the lives of under served youth in North and West Philadelphia. Squash is often referred to as chess on a court because of the physical and mental effort it requires of its players. For many of the program's participants, learning the sport of squash has improved their physical endurance as well as their mental concentration on and off the squash court.
