Help Determine Our Future

As you probably know, MiND operates a small, unique public media operation serving 17 counties in the Philadelphia region, and an Internet site used by people all over the world. On the TV side, we operate five digital channels: 35.1 (MiND’s five minute programs, music and other fund-raising programs, Democracy Now!, documentaries, and more), 35.2 (NHK World), 35.3 (France 24), 35.4 (RT) and, only for over-the-air viewers, 35.5 (MHz Worldview).

In an effort to provide more spectrum/bandwidth for first responders and wireless services, the FCC would like to buy 100-200 broadcast television licenses. The FCC buy-back is completely voluntary–local broadcast stations may choose to participate, or not to participate. The dollar amount is high: The Wall Street Journal reported median amounts as high as $250 million (and more for some stations) in the Philadelphia region.

MiND is all about public service through public media. So: we are evaluating whether we ought to continue as a local public television station (which is not a robust business because there are three other public TV stations in the Philadelphia market), or to build new forms of public media. If we choose the latter, we plan to arrange for alternate sources of programs shown on MiND.
